Wallace, Henry

BORN NORTH SHIELDS, 16/02/1882. SON OF WILLIAM WALLACE (1844-1893) AND MARY ANN WALLACE (1846-1893). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

HE MARRIED MARY JANE ALLINSON, IN NORTH SHIELDS REGISTRY OFFICE, ON 27/06/1904. HIS WIFE MARY JANE & SIX CHILDREN (HENRY, ELEANOR, LILY, JAMES, DAVID STEPHENSON & JOHN ROBERT WILKINSON) LIVED AT 31 AIRLIE STREET, HULL. A JOINER. HE PLAYED HALF BACK RUGBY FOR WEST HARLEPOOL BEFORE JOINING HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 06/12/1915, AGED 33 AND 10 MONTHS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 14/10/1916. SERVED WITH THE 10TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. HE DIED AT ARRAS, ON 08/03/1917, AGED 35. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MARY.

BOTH PARENTS DECEASED. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND 6 CHILDREN. BROTHERS, ROBERT AND WILLIAM WALLACE, AND SISTERS, ELEANOR, LILY AND MARY, IN NORTH SHIELDS.

HIS WIDOW WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY PENSION OF 33 SHILLINGS AND NINE PENCE FOR HERSELF AND SIX DEPENDENT CHILDREN.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD. HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, DAVID STEPHENSON WALLACE, WAS A SCHOOL MASTER AND GRADUATE OF DURHAM UNIVERSITY. COMMISSIONED INTO THE SPECIAL RESERVE OF OFFICERS, IN 1912. HE SERVED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT, 2ND SOUTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, IN FRANCE, ON 19TH SEPTEMBER 1914, AGED 24.
