BORN HALSHAM, YORKSHIRE, 1884. HE LIVED IN PRESTON, AND HULL. ELDEST SON OF THEOPHILIUS ALBERT WHATLING (1856-1921) AND WILFREDA STATTERS (1865-1903). SON OF A FARM FOREMAN, FROM SUFFOLK. HE HAD FOUR YOUNGER BROTHERS. HE WORKED AS A FARM HORSEMAN AND AS SHUNTER FOR THE LOCAL RAILWAY COMPANY. HE MARRIED SARAH ANN CRUISE (1875-1951) AT BAYSWATER, LONDON, IN 1908. THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN, GORDON AND SARAH WILFREDA AND LIVED AT 4 CLYDESDALE AVENUE, BALFOUR STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND LATER, PRESTON, NEAR HULL.
HE ENLISTED HULL. HE EMBARKED WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO FRANCE IN 1914. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, 6225, THE 3RD BATTALION, COLDSTREAM GUARDS. INJURED AT THE BATTLE OF MONS. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, AT SOUPIR, ON 14/09/1914, AGED 30.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, SARAH ANN WHATLING, WHO RETURNED TO HER NATIVE, KYLE, ROSCREAR, CO, TIPPERARY, IRELAND. SHE DIED THERE IN 1951, AGED 76.
HIS TWO YOUNGER BROTHERS, GEORGE WILLIAM WHATLING AND ALBERT WHATLING, BOTH DIED IN 1915. HIS OTHER BROTHER, THEOPHILIUS ARTHUR WHATLING DIED IN 1926, AGED 27.
