BORN HULL 26/08/1890. KNOWN AS STANLEY. SON OF THOMAS HENRY WHITTINGHAM (1846-1921) & LOUISE CHARLOTTE FOSTER (1845-1924), OF DAVENPORT AVENUE, HESSLE. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. HIS BROTHERS, JOHN & ALBAN, BOTH SERVING IN THE ROYAL NAVY, LIVED AT 59, WRIGHT STREET, HULL.
EDUCATED AT HULL HYMERS COLLEGE. HE WORKED AS AN ASSITANT DRAPER, AT WESTMINSTER, LONDON. HE EMIGRATED TO VANCOUVER, CANADA, IN 1912. HE WAS SINGLE. WORKED IN DRY GOODS, AS A DRAPER FOR GORDON DRYSDALES AND THE VARIETY STORE, VANCOUVER..
HE ENLISTED ON 05/07/1915. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8.5 INCHES TALL, 38-41 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, DARK BROWN HAIR, PRESBYTERIAN RELIGION. SERVED OVERSEAS, WITH THE 29TH CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. WOUNDED AT VIMMY RIDGE. RETURNED TO UNIT AND WOUNDED AGAIN BY GAS AND LIQUID FIRE. HE RETURNED AGAIN TO HIS UNIT , BUT DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 03/06/1918, AGED 27, AT NO:4 CANADIAN FIELD HOSPITAL. HEIS BURIED AT WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY”
