Wilkinson, Arthur

BORN HULL 1896. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM WILKINSON (1867-1951) & ANNIE ELIZABETH WILKINSON (1870-1944), OF 144 NEW BRIDGE ROAD, HULL. SON OF A SHIPWRIGHT. HE HAD EIGHT BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER.

AN APPRENTICE BOOK BINDER, WITH WITH MESSRS, HARLAND, MANOR STREET, HULL. HE WAS A REGULAR ATTENDER OF QUEENS HALL CHURCH.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 4TH EAST YORKSHIRES AND WENT TO FRANCE WITH COLONEL SHAW, IN APRIL 1915. HE WAS NEAR COLONEL SHAW WHEN HE WAS KILLED.  ARTHUR DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 01/12/1916, AGED 20. HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED IN ACTION, THE PREVIOUS DAY. HIS COMMANDER, CAPTAIN DIBB AND THIRTEEN COMRADES WHO HAD SERVED WITH HIM SINCE MOBILISATION, WROTE A SYMPATHETIC LETTER, TO HIS MOTHER. ” HE WAS A CONSCIENTIOUS AND ENERGETIC SOLDIER, CHEERFUL AND CONTENTED UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, AND IN HIM WE FOUND GOOD COMPANY AND SUPPORT. ”

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 15/02/1916. *

HIS BROTHER, CORPORAL, WILFRED WILKINSON, SERVED WITH THE 2ND/4TH EAST YORKSHIRES.
