BORN BEVERLEY 1899. YOUNGEST SON OF GEORGE WINTER (1846-1906) & HARRIET MOWTHORPE (1857-1930), OF 40, EDGECUMBE STREET, HULL AND 7, MILL LANE, BEVERLEY. SON OF A TANNER’S LABOURER. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. THE FAMILY LIVED AT MARKET WEIGHTON (1881), BEVERLEY (1891) AND HULL (1901 & 1911 CENSUS).
HE SERVED AS A GUNNER, IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DIED IN HOSPITAL, OF GAS POISONING, ON 17/09/1918, AGED 19, AT THE 55TH GENERAL HOSPITAL. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE SHARED BETWEEN HIS MOTHER, HARRIET, HIS BROTHERS, CHARLES AND WILLIAM AND HIS SISTERS, CLARA FOSTER AND JESSIE SHEARMAN. HE IS BURIED AT WIMILLE, FRANCE.
TWO OF HIS FOUR BROTHERS DIED IN THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, CLARENCE WINTER SERVED AS PRIVATE, 27078, 1/4TH EYR, “B” COMPANY, 8TH PLATOON. WAS TAKEN PRISONER ON 23/03/1918 AND DIED IN CAPTIVITY, OF INFLUENZA, ON 30/09/1918, AGED 21. HIS BODY WAS UNRECOVERED AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL FRANCE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 38 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, HARRIET, WHO HAD LOST THREE SONS IN THE WAR.
HIS ELDER BROTHER, HARRY WINTER, SERVED AS A SERGEANT, WITH THE 2ND YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED ON 06/11/1918, AGED 40. HE IS BURIED AT BETTRECHIES COMMUNAL CEMETERY, NORD FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “DEARER TO MEMORY THAN WORDS CAN TELL” HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, HARRIET, HIS BROTHERS, CHARLES AND WILLIAM AND HIS SISTERS, CLARA FOSTER AND JESSIE SHEARMAN.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS, WW1 MEMORIAL, AT BEVERLEY MEMORIAL HALL WHICH RECORDS 145 MEMBERS WHO DIED IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
THE THREE WINTER BROTHERS ARE RECORDED TOGETHER ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHNS, NEWLAND, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL.
