BORN BARTON ON HUMBER, 1891. SON OF HENRY WOODWARD (1860-1927) & FRANCES KATE GOODWIN (1861-1927), AT 31 MASON STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. WMPLOYED AS A PACKER IN THE LOCAL LEAD WORKS, MESSERS, HARGREAVES, OF GIPSYVILLE, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN THE 2ND KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. KILLED ON 02/08/1917, AGED 26. ASHELL HIT HIS BILLET WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING. HE WAS MUCH RESPECTED BY OFFICERS AND MEN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 09/08/1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED AT COXYDE MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE IS INSCRIBED “WORTHY OF EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE”.
HIS BROTHER, ARTHUR ERNEST WOODWARD, 213819, YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS INVALIDED FROM THE ARMY AND AWARDED A SILVER WAR BADGE. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 20/01/1920, AGED 23, AND IS BURIED IN HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.
HIS FATHER SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY. HIS BROTHER, WILLIAM WOODWARD, SERVED WITH THE RIFLE BRIGADE, IN FRANCE. ANOTHER, BROTHER CHARLES WOODWARD, SERVED WITH THE LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT, IN INDIA
