William Fewlass Atkinson 1883-1915)

BORN HULL 04/06/1883. BAPTISED AT ST BARNABAS CHURCH, HESSLE ROAD, ON 23/06/1883. SECOND OF EIGHT SONS OF THOMAS ATKINSON (1859-1939) & MARTHA ANN WITTY (1862-1935), OF 5 NEWTON STREET, HULL. EDUCTED AT THE COUNCIL AND GIGHER GRADE SCHOOLS, HULL.

HE WORKED AS A CLERK FOR MR GOY, OF LOWGATE, HULL. EMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1905. HE WAS A CLERK AND BUSINESS MAN TO A RAILWAY CONTRACTOR IN CANADA AND WAS ON HOLIDAY IN ENGLAND, WHEN WAR BROKE OUT. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 19/10/1914.  SERVED WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE PIONEERS. POSTED TO THE DARDENELLES ON 01/07/1915. KILLED DURING THE TERRIBLE FIGHTING AT “CHOCOLATE HILL”, GALLIPOLLI, ON 09/08/1915, AGED 32.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 08/10/1915 & 22/08/1916. HE WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED AND ESTEEMED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HELLES MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING AND RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 2, PAGE 13, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.

THE NAME ‘FEWLASS’ CAME FROM HIS MOTHER’S SIDE OF THE FAMILY, USUALLY AS A MIDDLE NAME, FOR THE ‘WITTY’ OFF SPRING. HIS WIFE ANN LIVED AT 24 , DEVON STREET, GIPSYVILLE, HULL.

HIS FOUR BROTHERS SERVED, ONE TAKEN PRISONER AND ANOTHER DROWNED IN  AT SEA, SERVING WITH THE MERCHANT NAVY.
