BORN HULL 23/07/1898. SON OF JAMES ARTHUR BECK (1870-1948) & ANNIE ELIZABETH WARDLOW (1874-1941). HE WAS ONE OF NINE CHILDREN AT 4, VILLA TERRACE, GRANGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS).
JAMES SERVED AS AN ORDINARY TELEGRAPHIST, ON HMS ‘MARMION’, AN “M CLASS” DESTROYER, WHICH COLLIDED WITH HMS ‘TIRADE’, IN BAD WEATHER, OFF LERWICK, SHETLAND ISLANDS. JAMES BECK DIED IN THIS INCIDENT, ON 21/10/1917, AGED 20. UNMARRIED. HIS WAR PENSION WENT TO HIS MOTHER, ANNIE. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.
GRANGE STREET, WAS HEAVILLY BOMBED IN WW2 AND NO LONGER EXISTS.
