BORN HULL 24/02/1891. YOUNGEST SON OF GEORGE BIRD (1853-1929) AND SARAH BEST (1855-1935), OF 22, GLASGOW STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. THREE SONS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR.
A REGULAR SOLDIER. HE MARRIED ETHEL CLARA STICKLEY (1894-1987), IN KENSINGTON, ON 12/02/1916. THEY LIVED AT 15 WEST ROW, KENSAL ROAD, KENSINGTON, WITH THEIR SON, REGINALD WILLIAM BIRD, BEM, WAS BORN THERE ON 24/04/1917.
HE SERVED, AS COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR, 1ST BATTALION COLDSTREAM GUARDS. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 13/08/1914. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR BRAVERY. WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 27/09/1918, AGED 27. HE IS BURIED AT SANDERS KEEP MILITARY CEMETERY, GRAINCOURT-LES-HAVRINCOURT.
HIS NAME IS INSCRIBED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST WW1 MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON HULL, WITH ONE OF HIS BROTHERS, WILLIAM.
HE WAS BROTHER TO JOHN EDWARD BIRD, MARGARET AND GERTRUDE.
HIS BROTHER, GEORGE BIRD, 2ND COLDSTREAM GUARDS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES ON 27/10/1914.
HIS OTHER BROTHER, WILLIAM BIRD, 1ST NORTHANTS WAS ALSO KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 12/09/1916, AGED 28.
