BORN HEDON, HULL, 1896. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY CAUTLEY (1870-1950) & MARGARET HOLMES STATHER (1870-1932), OF 1 GEORGE STREET, HEDON (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS SERGEANT, 12363, 8TH YORKSHIRE HUSSARS (ALEXANDRAS PRINCES OF WALES OWN) REGIMENT. RECOMMENDED FOR THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM) FOR BRAVERY IN 1916. HE SIEZED SOME BOMBS, RAN ACROSS THE BAPAUME ROAD, AND BOMBED THE ENEMY, CAUSING THEM TO RETREAT. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE THAT “HE HAS FREQUENTLY SHOWN GREAT GALLANTRY AND DEVOTION TO DUTY” (HDM 05/11/1916)

HE DIED IN ITALY ON 28/10/1918, AGED 23. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER MARGARET. HE LEFT £570 IN HIS WILL TO FLORENCE BURN, A MARRIED WOMAN. HE IS BURIED AT STAGLIENO CEMETERY, GENOA, ITALY.
SGT. CAUTLEY, MM, IS RECORDED ON THE ROLL OF HONOUR AT THE ARMY CADET FORCE HQ, DRIFFIELD. HIS MILITARY AWARD WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 1ST NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*
HE IS ONE OF 18 HEDON MEN, LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, IVY LANE HEDON. ALSO RECORDED ON THE BILTON WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST PETERS CHURCH, BILTON WITH HIS BROTHER (57 MEN SERVED, 6 DIED)

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, WALTER CAUTLEY, 11/544, 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, DIED OF WOUNDS, AT OPPY WOOD, ON 04/05/1917, AGED 20 AND IS BURIED AT DUISANS, CEMETERY, ETRUN, FRANCE.
