BORN WAKEFIELD 1894. SON OF CATHERINE GILL (1862-1951) & WALTER CLAPHAM (1858-1903) AT 3, KINGSTON SQUARE, CHARLES STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). BROTHER TO WILFRED AND OLIVE CLAPHAM. HIS FATHER WAS ONE TIME MEMBER OF WAKEFIELD CITY COUNCIL. ALAN WAS EDUCATED AT MONASTRY COLLEGE, AMPLEFORTH, NORTH YORKSHIRE. HE WAS ARTICLED WITH MESSRS, SMAILES, DRURY AND HOLTBY, CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS IN HULL. HE ENLSTED IN HULL, IN FEBRUARY 1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, 13/07/1915. SERVED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION. ON 03/01/1916, AGED 21.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE YORKSHIRE EVENING POST, ON 10/01/1916. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, CATHERINE.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST CHARLES BORROMEO, CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
HIS ELDER BROTHER, WILFRED ALSO SERVED AS AN OFFICER.
ALAN CHARLES CLAPHAM IS BURIED AT RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND (TRANSPORT FARM), YPRES. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE WHO GIVES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT”
