BORN HULL 1885. KNOWN AS WILLIAM CLAYTON. SON OF JOSEPH CLAYTON (1853-1925) & BETSY JANE WINN (1854-1916), OF 169 ALLIANCE AVENUE, HULL (1911 CENSUS). ELDEST OF 5 CHILDREN. HE MARRIED AT SCULCOATES, HULL, IN 1911. HUSBAND OF GERTRUDE LILIAN JACKSON, OF 20 NELSON STREET, BRIDLINGTON, YORKSHIRE. SHE WAS THE ADOPTED DAUGHTER OF THE STORIN FAMILY, AT 19 SALBURN STREET, HULL, AND WORKED AT RECKITTS, CANNISTER WORKS. HE WAS A POST OFFICE WORKER.
HE ENLISTED AT LONDON TO JOIN THE 2/8TH LONDON REGIMENT (POST OFFICE RIFLES). SERVED AS CORPORAL, 371357, AND WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM) FOR BRAVERY. HE WAS KILLED AT PASSCHENDAELE, ON 30/10/1917, AGED 32. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM, TO THE MISSING. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, GERTRUDE AND CHILDREN.
