BORN DAUGAVPILS, LATVIA (THEN DVINSK IN RUSSIA) JULY 1895. SON OF HARRIS (AARON) CUCKLE (1859-1906) AND SOPHIA CUCKLE (1863-1932), AT 18 OXFORD TERRACE, PORTER STREET, HULL, (1911 CENSUS) & 19 , ST LUKES STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL AND JOINED THE SCOTTISH SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS IN JUNE 1915. HE HAD BEEN ON ACTIVE SERVICE FOR EIGHT MONTHS. THE 4TH SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS, WERE PART OF THE 51ST HIGHLAND DIVISION (12,000 MEN) WHICH ATTACKED HIGH WOOD, ON THE SOMME, SUFFERING 3,500 CASUALTIES. LOUIS WAS KILLED IN ACTION, A MONTH BEFORE HIS 22ND BIRTHDAY, ON 24/07/1916, AGED 21. HE WAS ONE OF HULL’S MANY JEWISH CASUALTIES.
BEFORE THE WAR LOUIS CUCKLE, HAD BEEN A TAILOR’S APPRENTICE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 17TH AUGUST 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * (ALSO HDM, ON 16/08/1916 & 02/09/1916).
HE WAS AWARDED THE BRITISH WAR MEDAL AND VICTORY MEDAL. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, SOPHIA. HE LEFT BROTHERS, MAX CUCKLE (1884-1959), BARNEY CUCKLE (1892-1952) AND SISTER, GERTRUDE CUCKLE (WHO DIED ON 23/05/1916, AGED 28) AND SARAH SONIA CUCKLE (1892-1959). MEMORIAL TREES ARE PLANTED IN ISRAEL TO REMEMBER HIM.
PRIVATE, LOUIS CUCKLE, IS BURIED AT QUARRY CEMETERY, MONTAUBAN, SOMME, FRANCE. (GRAVE E9, SECTION IV). HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “GONE FROM OUR SIGHT BUT FOR EVER IN OUR HEARTS”
