BORN BRIGHTON, SUSSEX 1880. LIVED HULL. SON OF WILLIAM COWAN CURRIE & MARGARET MATHILDA DRYSDALE, 179 NEW BRIDGE ROAD, HULL. A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER SERVING WITH THE 17TH LANCERS. MARRIED MARIE ALLINE REVELL (1883-1961), ON 27/02/1907, AT COLABA, BOMBAY INDIA. HIS WIFE MARIE LIVED AT THIS CWGC ADDRESS IN HULL. HE SERVED AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT, WITH THE 1ST LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS. “FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY AND DEVOTION TO DUTY WHEN COMMANDING A COMPANY. HE DISPLAYED MUCH SKILL WHILE ORGANISING DEFENCES AND CONSOLIDATING POSITIONS. HE HEADED A BOMBING ATTACK, AND AT ALL TIMES, HE SET AN EXAMPLE OF COURAGE AND DETERMINATION.”
HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE, ON 28/03/1918, AGED 39. HE LEFT £315 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, WHO MOVED TO 21 CURZON STREET, HULL. HE IS BURIED AT VILLERS-FAUCON COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “I THANK MY GOD UPON EVERY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU”
HE LEFT TWO SISTERS, ISABEL AND MAGGIE. HIS ONLY BROTHER, ROBERT WILLIAM CURRIE, DIED IN HULL IN 1918, AGED 44.
