BORN HULL 1895. (SURNAME IS ALSO SPELT DEVEROUX). KNOW AS “ERNIE”. YOUNGEST SON OF EDWARD WALLACE DEVEREAUX (1859-1906). HIS FATHER HAD WORKED FOR LEE SMITH IL MILLS, WINCOLMLEE AND HAD BEEN KILLED IN AN INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENT AGED 47. HIS MOTHER, ALICE HAILSTONE (1865-1952), MARRIED WILLIAM JOHNSON LOND IN OCTOBER 1909, AND LIVED AT 6 BELVOIR STREET, HULL. “ERNIE” WAS EDUCATED AT NORTHUMBERLAND AVENUE COUNCIL SCHOOL. HE WORKED FOR BLUNDELL, SPENCE & CO PAINT WORKS, ON BEVERLEY ROAD. HIS STEP FATHER AND BROTHERS ALSO WORKED FOR THE SAME PAINT WORKS. HE ALSO PLAYED FOR BLUNDELL’S RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. HE SERVED AS CORPORAL, 98929, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 19/06/1916, AGED 21. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS, WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MRS ALICE LOND, AT 6, BELVOIR STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 4 SHAKESPEARE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE WAS BROTHER, TO GEORGE, JAMES, EVA, AND GERTRUDE.
BURIED AT ESSEX FARM MILITARY CEMETERY, BOEZINGE, BELGIUM. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE OF HIM, “DEVEREUX WAS A SMART AND EFFICIENT SOLDIER, WELL LIKED BY ALL HIS OFFICERS AND COMRADES.”
