BORN HULL 04/07/1879. SON OF THOMAS ELLIOT (1843-1897) AND MARY RICHARDSON (1845-1914), OF 307 BOULEVARD, HULL. SON OF A TIN PLATE WORKER. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN, THE FAMILY LIVED AT 4 NEPTUNE PLACE AND 1 CLAPPISON SQUARE, SCULCOATES, HULL. JOHN ELLIOT HAD BEEN A REGULAR SOLDIER AND SERVED IN THE BOER WAR (Private 3052 of 16th Queens Lancers Boer War: 11 – 15th Feb 1900 Relief of Kimberley – 18 – 27th Feb Battle of Paardebog – 27 – 31st May Battle of Johannesburg)
HE RETURNED TO HULL, WHERE HE WORKED AS A FISH TRADE LABOURER. HE MARRIED MABEL JESSIEMINE LAMB (1883-1940), ON 25/05/1902, AT ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, HULL. THEY HAD EIGHT CHILDREN. RESIDED AT CHARLES STREET, AND 9 NORMANDY TERRACE, SCULCOATES, HULL AND 1 WESTBOURNE TERRACE, WESTBOURNE STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 4TH JULY 1914. EX 24185, ARMY SERVICE CORPS AND 1ST NORTHUMBRIAN VETINARY SECTION. HIS MOTHER DIED IN 1914. AS DID HIS SON GEORGE ELLIOTT, AGED JUST SEVEN YEARS OLD. ANOTHER SON, JAMES DIED IN 1915, AGED 1.
HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 14TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS, A PIONEER’S BATTALION, WHICH HAD BEEN RAISED IN NEWCASTLE, AND TRAINED AT TRING. HE DIED ON 27/05/1918, AGED 37.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL; (Soissons, Departement de l’Aisne, Picardie, France)
HIS BROTHER, GUNNER, THOMAS EDWARD ELLIOTT, ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY, DIED ON 13/09/1917, AND IS BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY.
PRIVATE, JOSEPH THOMAS ELLIOT, 5TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED ON 25/04/1915, AGED 30 AND ALSO RESIDED AT 307 BOULEVARD, HULL (HDM 11/05/1915)
