HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 29/12/1914, AGED 28 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 5.5 INCHES TALL, 37 INCH CHEST.. SERVED IN “C” COMPANY, WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN EGYPT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. WOUNDED IN THE FACE BY A GRENADE, ON 8/09/1916. RETURNED TO UNIT ON 26/09/1916. PROMOTED LANCE SERGEANT, ON 1/10/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 30. LISTED ON THE COTTINGHAM WW1 MEMORIAL AND THE FAMILY GRAVE AT COTTINGHAM CEMETERY. HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE COTTINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH WW1 PLAQUE. HE IS BURIED AT LUKE COPSE BRITISH CEMETERY, PUISIEUX, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “DEARLY LOVED”
