Samuel William Harwood, Chief Engineer, Steam Ship “TORO”, lost 12/04/1917.

BORN HULL 1872. SON OF SAMUEL HARWOOD (1843-1907) AND MARIA MAYES. A MARINE ENGINEER. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS.

HE MARRIED ADA CECILIA WILSON (1872-1928), AT HULL’S HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, ON 13/07/1893. THEY HAD FIVE SONS. LIVING AT 7 AIRLIE STREET, THE BOULEVARD, HULL. HE WAS LOST ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘TORO’ ON 12/04/1917, AGED 45. HE LEFT £212 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, ADA.
Note: His son, Samuel Edgar Harwood, served as 10/501, with the 8th (Service) Battalion Formed at Beverley on 22 September 1914, and came under orders of 62nd Brigade, 21st Division. 9 September 1915 : landed at Boulogne. 16 November 1915 : transferred to 8th Brigade, 3rd Division. Killed in action, on 19/07/1916, aged 21.
SS Toro, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 3066 tons.
On April 12th, 1917, Toro, on a voyage from Alexandria to Hull with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-55 (Wilhelm Werner), 200 miles WNW of Ushant (Ouessant). 14 persons were lost.
