BORN CHADDLEWORTH, BERKSHIRE 1871. SON OF JOHN HEDLEY (1830-1866) & ANN COLLEY. HE MARRIED AT NEWCASTLE IN 1900. HIS WIFE ADA MARIE BAINBRIDGE AND TWO CHILDREN (JOAN AND JOHN) LIVED IN HORNSEA. HE WAS AN INLAND REVENUE DISTRICT VALUER AND MASONIC MEMBER. AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR HEDLEY WAS ATTACHED TO THE TERRITORIALS AND WENT TO FRANCE TO COMMAND THE 6TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE LATER COMMANDED THE 6TH BORDER REGIMENT. WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER (DSO), AND MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES (MID). HE DIED IN FLANDERS AGED 46. HE WAS WELL KNOWN IN HULL AND HORNSEA AND GREATLY RESPECTED. LEFT £3,237 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, ADA AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. A MEMORIAL WINDOW WAS DEDICATED TO HIM IN THE PARISH CHURCH. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 25TH APRIL 1919. HE IS BURIED AT BUCQUOY ROAD CEMETERY, FICHEUX. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “WE ASKED FOR THEM LIFE THOU GAVEST THEM LIFE MORE ABUNDANT”.
HIS BROTHER, LIEUTENANT, JAMES FREDERICK HEDLEY, ARMY SERVICE CORPS, DIED AT SWINDON HOSPITAL, ON 13/01/1916, AGED 54.
