BORN BEVERLEY 1882. SON OF WILLIAM THOMAS HOGGARD (1846-1910) & SUSANNAH NEWLOVE (1846- 1885), OF KELDGATE, BEVERLEY. BROTHER TO HENRY, JANE AND FANNY. EDUCATED AT TRAFALGA DAY SCHOOL. WORKED AT PLANET IRON FOUNDRY AS A MOULDER. HE JOINED THE ARMY IN MANCHESTER ON 19/01/1901, AGED 18, DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 134 LBS WEIGHT, 38 INCH CHEST, 35 INCH WAIST, GREY EYES, DARK BROWN HAIR, WESLYEAN RELIGION . HE SERVED WITH THE 1ST KINGS OWN (ROYAL LANCASTER REGIMENT) FOR 12 YEARS IN MALTA, SOUTH AFRICA AND INDIA. AN ARMY RESERVIST. HE WAS RECALLED TO SERVICE ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. HE MARRIED, HANNAH HEPPENSTALL (1889-1971) IN OLDHAM, LANCASHIRE, ON 14/08/1914. HIS WIFE, HANNAH LIVED AT 41 CLYDE STREET, OLDHAM. HE MARRIED BEFORE BEING POSTED TO FRANCE. APPOINTED CORPORAL ON 21/10/1914 AND PROMOTED TO ACTING SERGEANT ON 17/12/1914.
HE WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM) ON 26/12/1914, FOR REMAINING IN HIS TRENCH, ENCOURAGING HIS COMRADES AND HOLDING BACK THE ENEMY. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT LA BASSEE., ON 07/01/1915, AGED 32. MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES IN THE LONDON GAZETTE, ON 17/02/1915.

HE SERVED AS SERGEANT, 6672, 1ST KINGS OWN (ROYAL LANCASTER REGIMENT) AND HAD BEEN IN THE ARMY FOR 13 YEARS AND 243 DAYS. HE IS BURIED AT TANCREZ FARM CEMETERY, HAINAUT, BELGIUM.
