PRIVATE ALFRED GARLAND HOUGHTON 12/1191. Born Hull 1896. Alfred was the fourth of eight children to William Houghton (1866-1950) and Elizabeth Matthews (1868-1953), of 117 Woodcock Street, Hull. A former NER Railway worker and Shop Messenger employed in the Hull Fish trade. He enlisted at City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He served in Egypt before arriving in France on March 8th 1916 and travelling north from Marseilles to the trenches of the Western Front. Alfred was killed in action on 26th May 1916 and is buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps; He was 20 years old and lived at 12 Lorne Terrace, Lorne Street, with his wife & 2 children. He also lived at 3 Marlborough Terrace, Westbourne Street, Hull and his death and address was reported in the Hull Daily Mail with his photograph (HDM 03/07/1916). He left brother, William Houghton, who served on Minesweepers.
He is recorded on the Westbourne Street, Roll of Honour, (Hull Daily Mail 22 September 1916). He is also listed on the ww1 memorial at St John The Baptist Church, Newington, Hull.
