BORN HULL 1891. SON OF ADOLPH FREDRIK JOHANNSON (1840-1923) AND LOUISA SCHROEDER KRAUSE (1861-1837), OF 3, ENGLISH STREET, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS SWEDISH. HIS MOTHER GERMAN. HE HAD EIGHT SIBLINGS AND FOUR HALF SIBLINGS FROM HIS FATHER’S FIRST MARRIAGE.
HIS WIFE, MRS BEATRICE HAYMAN JOHNSON LIVED AT, 5, HARRIETS TERRACE, EASTBOURNE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). A FORMER PAINT GRINDER, BOARDING AT 108 DAY STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE WAS WORKING AS A FRUIT TRADER IN HUMBER STREET, HULL WHEN WAR BEGAN. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY SERVED WITH THE 1ST COLDSTREAM GUARDS. ARRIVED IN BELGIUM WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 12/08/1914. TOOK PART IN THE RETREAT FROM MONS. HE WAS FEATURED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 13/11/1914. *
HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM) FOR GALLANTRY. AS A STRETCHER BEARER HE ATTENDED THE WOUNDED IN FULL VIEW OF THE ENEMY, UNDER FIRE AND WOUNDED HIMSELF. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 08/11/1918, AGED 27. HAD SERVED THROUGHOUT AND DIED JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE THE WAR ENDED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, BEATRICE HAYMAN. THEY HAD MARRIED IN HULL THE PREVIOUS MONTH IN OCTOBER 1918.
BURIED AT LA LONGUEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY, NORD, FRANCE. THE GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY DEAR HUSBAND I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT I HAVE FINISHED MY COURSE”
HIS HALF BROTHER, PRIVATE, FREDERICK HERMAN OSCAR JOHNSON, LIVED IN SUNDERLAND. HE SERVED WITH THE 11TH ESSEX REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 17/10/1918, AGED 36
