BORN HULL 13/10/1892. YOUNGEST SON OF CHARLES JOULES (1847-1919) & MARY ANN BUTLER (1851-1918), OF 14 HARCOURT STREET, HULL. ONE OF THIRTEEN CHILDREN, SEVERAL OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. THE FAMILY ALSO LIVED AT 61 ABBEY STREET, HULL. BEFORE THE WAR, HE WORKED AS AN APPRENTICE JOINER, FOR MESSRS HARRISON & CO, HOLDERNESS ROAD. HE STARTED WORK FOR THE NORTH EASTEN RAILWAYS, IN OCTOBER 1913.
HE ENLISTED AT YORK, ON 18/09/1914. HE ENLISTED ORIGINALLY AS PRIVATE, 434, NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS AND HAD RECENTLY TRANSFERRED TO THE YORKS & LANCS REGIMENT. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM, AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 129 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST, FRESH COMPLEXION, BLUE EYES AND LIGHT BROWN HAIR.
HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 01/07/1916. WOUNDED IN THE BACK, ON 03/08/1916. RETURNED TO HIS UNIT AND WAS KILLED ON THE 9TH APRIL 1917. (Likely died at the First Battle of the Scarpe (9-14 Apr 1917), Second Battle of Arras (9 Apr-16 May 1917) during the Franco-British Nivelle Offensive.)
HE IS BURIED AT RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND (TRANSPORT FARM), BELGIUM.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 24/04/1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH AND 01/06/1917.
HE LEFT BROTHERS, CHARLES, HERBERT, HAROLD, ERNEST, WALTER & SISTERS FLORENCE, EDITH, LILY AND FANNY. HIS PARENTS BOTH DIED SOON AFTER THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, ERNEST JOULES, WAS KILLED ON 02/03/1916 AND HAROLD JOULES, DROWNED ON THE S/S CALYPSO, ON 10/07/1916.
ANOTHER BROTHER WALTER JOULES, NEVER RECOVERED FROM HIS WAR EXPERIENCES AND DIED IN A DRINK DRIVING ACCIDENT, IN 1921, AGED 31.
THEIR OTHER BROTHER, CAPTAIN, CHARLES WILLIAM JOULES SERVED AS A MASTER MARINER AND DIED IN 1940.
THEY LEFT SISTERS, FANNY, EDITH, FLORENCE AND LILLIAN.
