BORN HULL 1900. SON OF WALTER NEWBY AND SARAH ANN HUNT, 75 EDGAR STREET. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN, FROM A FISHING FAMILY. A FISHERMAN LIKE HIS FATHER AND BROTHERS. SERVED AS A COAL TRIMMER, ON THE MAGNETA TRAWLER. LOST WITH HIS BROTHER FRED, ON 01/02/1922, DURING THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR. THEIR YOUNGER BROTHER ALFRED HAD DROWNED ON THE TITANIA, ON 11/05/1916, AGED 16. THEIR FATHER WALTER NEWBY, SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY RESERVE, THROUGHOUT THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND DIED IN 1941.
On February 1st, 1922, the British trawler MAGNETA, built in 1915 by Cochrane & Sons Shipbuilders and owned by Ross, Francis & Thomas, Ltd, was wrecked in a hurrican. 9 crew and 2 Russians lost their lives. The MAGNETA was fishing legally 9 miles from the Russian border. Despite that, she was arrested and ordered to anchor at Porchnika Bay. Unfortunately, a hurricane made her ran shore and she was lost with 9 crew members and 2 Russian members of the gunboat’s crew. Only 2 crew members, who were taken aboard the gunboat survived. A long legal battle between the British and Russian government ended with the Russians finally accepting liability.
