Pippet MM, John Gilbert

Youngest son of Mrs. Margaret Maude Pippet, of Hambleton Villa, Market Rasen, Lincs & Hull. Born at Everingham, Yorks. He was the first to start the Scout Movement in Market Rasen. Was member of the Office staff at the Rank Flour Mills, Hull. He enlisted in the Hull Commercials. Served in Egypt and France and at one point was the only surviving member of the Company. he rose through the ranks. Awarded the Military Medal for valor. In September 1917, he was Commissioned into the 1st Lincoln Regiment. he was killed in action, on 29/05/1918, aged 23. John’s death was reported with his photograph in the Hull Daily Mail on 22nd June 1918.*

His brother Cyril was also killed in the war. Both brothers were educated at De Aston Grammar school, Market Rasen, where they excelled in football, running and cricket. They were both highly respected and esteemed in business circles.
