BORN HULL 1897. ONLY SON OF GEORGE W & MARY PRESTON, OF 10, UPPER UNION STREET, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS, 03/11/1916), 5, CARISBROOK AVENUE, MONTROSE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND KILNWICK PERCY, POCKLINGTON.

BEFORE JOINING THE ARMY HE WORKED FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS, ON THE DREDGER ‘LORD JOICEY’.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL IN JANUARY 1914. SERVED IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY WITH THE 32ND TRENCH MORTAR BATTALION. HE HAD BEEN AT THE FRONT FOR FOR NINE MONTHS. HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR BRAVERY, AT THE SOMME IN 1916. HE WAS KILLED BY A SHELL, AND DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 07/06/1917, AGED 20.

HE IS BURIED AT BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY, FRANCE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON THE 4TH JULY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
