BORN COTTINGHAM 1879. YOUNGEST SON OF JAMES RUTHVEN (1838-1922) & AGNES RUTHVEN (1841-1901), ‘HAZELMERE’ HOUSE, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND FIVE SISTERS.
HIS WIFE VIOLET RUTHVEN LIVED AT 66 SELBY STREET, HULL. WILLIAM WAS WELL KNOWN IN HULL AS A VOLUNTEER RESERVE OFFICER. AT THE START OF WAR HE GAVE UP HIS BUSINESS AS A OIL BROKER IN THE HIGH STREET, TO ENLIST IN THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRAINED MANY OF THE RECRUITS AND WENT WITH THEM TO EGYPT AND FRANCE. HE WAS SELECTED FOR SPECIAL TRAINING DUTIES IN ALDERSHOT, ARMY CAMP, IN 1916. HE LEFT FOR FRANCE AGAIN AND SERVED WITH 2/6TH GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS COMMANDING THE BATTALION, AT THE TIME HE WAS KILLED, REPELLING A STRONG GERMAN ATTACK. HE LEFT £2,201 TO HIS OLDER BROTHER, CAPTAIN, JAMES RUTHVEN, MC, 4TH EYR, WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 10/04/1918, AGED 46.
HIS WIDOW VIOLET MOVED TO BEDFORD. HIS MEDALS WERE CLAIMED BY HIS ELDEST SISTER, AMELIA, ON 26/01/1920, WHO LIVED AT “HAZELDENE”, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL
WILLIAM LOGAN RUTHVEN IS LISTED ON HULL’S HYMER COLLEGE WW1 MEMORIAL & IN THE TRINITY CHURCH MEMORIAL.BOOK. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 2ND DECEMBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * THE FAMILY GRAVE AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY COMMEMORATES BOTH BROTHERS LOST IN THE WAR. THEY WERE BOTH CHORISTERS AT HULL HOLY TRINITY CHURCH AND ARE COMMEMORATED ON A PLAQUE AT HULL MINSTER.
