BORN COTTINGHAM 1895. SON OF ARTHUR VAREY (1866-1942) & MARTHA ELEAANOR STEFF (1862-1938), OF 150, SHARP STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A LIGHTERMAN. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. HE WORKED IN A PAINT MILL, WITH HIS BROTHER, PERCY.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, THE FIRST HULL PALS BATTALION.
HE MARRIED CISSIE NEALE (1898-1975), AT HULL, IN 1919. THEY HAD A YOUNG SON, SYDNEY (1920-1989) AND MOVED TO NORTH CAVE.
HE DIED OF GAS WOUNDS, 20/12/1920, AGED 26. BURIED IN HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY.
HIS BROTHER: PTE, PERCY CHARLES VAREY (1892-1963), 1/4TH EYR, WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL & DISCHARGED FROM SERVICE, ON 12/09/1917.
BOTH BROTHERS ARE REMEMBERED ON THE SHARP STREET ROLL OF HONOUR, HULL.
