BORN SWANLAND, YORKSHIRE 1884. SON OF HENRY WAUDBY (1862-1935) & LIZZIE CLARKSON WAUDBY (1863-1946) OF 6 CHURCH COTTAGE, NORTH FERRIBY (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A COACHMAN. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. .
Lance Corporal William Atkinson Waudby (brother of Alfred Neaves Waudby who was also killed in action in WW1) served with the York and Lancaster Regiment, 10th (Service) Batallion. His Regimental number was 38274, but was formerly 24528 with the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was born in Swanland but lived in 6 Church Cottages, North Ferriby.
His wife Mabel Elizabeth Gibbard (formerly Waudby), later lived at 92, Wigginton Road., Tamworth, Staffs. William was killed in action on the 31st July 1917. His Sergeant wrote to his wife reporting that William was an excellent machine gunner, that had successfully taken out an enemy machine gun nest, when he was killed by a sniper. A memorial service was held a Elloughton church. William’s death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail along with his photograph on 01/09/1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, on panel 36 and 5.
