HE ENLISTED IN THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL PALS), ON NOVEMBER 1914. TRAINED AT HURDCOTT CAMP. EMBARKED FROM DEVONPORT TO EGYPT, ON 16/12/1915. ARRIVED IN ALEXANDRIA, VIA MALTA, ON 27/12/1915. HE GUARDED THE SUEZ CANAL, DURING HOT DAYS AND COLD NIGHTS.. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 8/03/1916. STARTED TRAINING AS A BOMB THROWER ON 06/04/1916. STATIONED AT COLLINCAMPS AND COURCELET. MOVED TO BUS-LES-ARTOIS, (“BUS WOOD”) ON 14/06/1916. LEFT FOR THE TRENCHES ON 30/06/1916. WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT LEG, DURING A TRENCH RAID, ON 19/07/1916. MOVED TO MERVILLE, ON 05/10/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGE 22. BURIED ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “MEMORIA IN ETERNA”
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WILLIAM. UNMARRIED. HE LEFT SIBLINGS, BEATRICE, DORIS, EDWARD AND AMY WILLIAMS.
GEORGE WILLIAMS, IS LISTED IN HULL’S, HOLY TRINITY BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE WITH A MILITARY MEDAL. HIS NAME WAS ALSO RECORDED ON THE ST MARKS STREET MEMORIAL.
GEORGE WILLIAMS KEPT AN ARMY DIARY WHICH WAS LEFT TO HIS FRIEND, SGT, CHARLES VERITY, MM, 13/267, 13TH EYR ‘D’ COMPANY. CHARLES VERITY, WAS FROM CHURCH SIDE, BARROW ON HUMBER. HE SURVIVED THE WAR AND MARRIED THEIR MUTUAL FRIEND, ETHEL.CLIFTON IN 1920.
