Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FREEMAN WRIGHT 12/1295. Born in 1877, Freeman was the fifth of six children to George and Maria Wright of Lease Lane, East Halton, Lincolnshire. A Cycle Frame Builder by trade he married Alice Ann Revell and the couple lived at 10 Hungate, Barton-on-Humber with their three children Ella, Arthur and Ivy. He enlisted at Hull City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. Freeman Wright was killed in action on 13th November 1916 as the Pals attacked German positions around the ruins of the French town of Serre through mud up to their waists in places. The attack was one of the last desperate acts of the disastrous Somme campaign which had raged on all Summer and claimed an entire generation of young men. He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery; he was 40 years old. His wife died soon after leaving their two children, Arthur and Ivy as orphans. His war pension was awarded to her sister Anne Mary Revill, who became their guardian at 10 Hungate, Barton On Humber, Lincolnshire.
