
Born Hull, 1889. Son of Mr John Walter and Charlotte Mercer of 20, Francis Street, Hull (War Pension address).
His wife, Betsy Ann Dale, at 8, Poplars Parade, Chapman Street, Hull and then this address. Before joining the army, he worked for the Eagle Oil Mills, Wincolmlee, Hull.
He enlisted in February 1917. Formerly 29791, East Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred to the 13th Middlesex battalion.
He was killed in action , on 24/08/1917, aged 27. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium, to the missing.
His army effects were left to his widow, Betsy. They had one son, Charles, who died on 25/02/1918, aged 27.
His four brothers served in the army and another on minesweepers.
His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 14/09/1917.
