Born Dundee, Forfarshire, 1897. Son of John Mc Arthur and Helen Stirton Young (1860-1945), of 3, Johns Place, Adelaide Street, Hull (War Pension address). He had five brothers and one sister.
He enlisted in Dundee. Served as, Gunner, James McArthur (1897-1917), 646100, Royal Field Artillery, “D” Bty. 236th Bde. He was killed in action, on 22/07/1917, aged 20. His army effects were left to his mother, Helen, His sister, Ellen and brother William who was also a Gunner, in the RFA.
His brother, Private, David McArthur, DCM, served with the 1st Seaforth Highlanders and was killed in action, in the Persian Gulf, on 20/04/1916, aged 32. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) on 11/03/1916, for “Conspicuous bravery. when the remainder f the team had been put out of action by the enemy’s heavy fire, he continued to keep his gun going and by his bravery and resource, did much to save the situation when the line began to withdraw.”
His army effects were shared with his mother Helen, sister, Ellen C. Platt and brother Thomas. His death is not recorded in the CWGC records?
