Born Sandholme, Yorkshire, 1890. Son of Robert Haldenby Buttle and Mary Buttle, of Sandholme, Gilberdyke, Brough, East Yorkshire. He had one brother and three sisters. Worked as a Horseman on Farm.

He enlisted in Hull. Served in the 1/7th Northumberland Fusiliers. Died of wounds, on 01/11/1917, aged 27. Buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
