St Mary’s Lowgate, is Hull’s oldest church, with over 700 years of history.
The War Memorial in the Chapel of the Nativity, designed by Temple Moore & Moore, was unveiled in 1921. In the church courtyard outside, is a stone Calvary Memorial to the 1914-1918 war, erected in 1920.
The St Mary’s Roll of Honour, consists of paintings of three saints – Oswald, Michael and George and between them, two columns of 50 names of the fallen, in black letters.
The 100 names on the St Mary’s Memorial, include 15 Officers, 16 NCO’s, a Doctor and 12 sailors. The dead, include seven sets of brothers and 15 teenagers. Forty Four men have no known grave. Eighty Eight of the men died between 1916-1918 and eight died in the last month before the war ended. The youngest casualty was Walter Smethurst aged 17. The eldest was John William Booth aged 42, The average age of deaths was 27.
Some of the high profile casualties listed, include, Jack Harrison, the Hull Teacher and prolific try scorer for Hull FC, who was posthumously awarded Hull’s second Victoria Cross. Also, Lieutenant Colonel, Henry Lempriere, DSO, a Professional soldier. Also, Hull’s, Medical Officer, Sybil L. Lewis, who served as Doctor in the Balkans, was captured, released and despite poor health, established the Serbian Relief Fund. She was awarded Serbia’s highest decoration in gratitude.
There are four Hull teachers on the memorial (Foster, Harrison, Reeder and Stainforth), a Banker (Clifford Milne), Hull Librarian (Percy Hall) and two Postmen (Goodhill and Thomas Green). Francis Bamforth was a Captain in the Salvation Army, who enlisted as a Private and died on the Somme.
Percy Ram on the memorial, was the son of St Mary’s Vicar. He was killed on the first day of the Somme Battle. There is also George Simpson, whose mother sold newspapers outside the church for 30 years. William Leonard Thorpe left six children when he was killed. Birke, Barrett, Earle, Milne MC, O’Dell and Verney were only sons. George Shea, was an only child. The Diglin and Hutchinson families, lost three sons in the war.
The Memorial could include many more names. For example, the two Tindall’s listed, lost a third brother after the war, due to wounds. Thomas Green lost his brother Edward in the war John William Booth, and Walter Coggrave, both lost two brothers, which are not included on the memorial. Also, Lieutenant, Flintoff, lost a brother at Gallipoli, fighting for the Australians, who is also omitted.
