St John Parish Church, Newland, was consecrated in 1833 and assigned a consolidated chapelry from Cottingham in 1862. It had been renovated several times and by the time of WW1, St Johns, Newland, was a new looking church, on the outskirts of Hull, largely surrounded by farms and fields. Rapid house building between 1890-1915 transformed the Parish, into a new desirable location. Newlands became the preferred home of the Merchant Class’ with over 100 shops on Newland Avenue alone. Many of the addresses during WW1 still exist today.
The St John WW1 memorial, takes the form of a wooden Panel Board, listing 182 names. A new Church organ, Crucifix and several Stained glass windows were also dedicated to the war losses. The casualties reflect the demography of the prosperous area, with 22 Officers and 14 Sergeants recorded in the Casualties. Many of these men had been educated locally at the Hull Grammar School and Hymer’s College. The Newland WW1 casualties record 13 set of brothers. The Maynard and Winter families both living nearby in Edgecumbe Street, lost three sons in the war. The three Winter lads all being killed within 51 days in 1918.
Most of the casualties are soldiers. Only twelve sailors are listed. The majority of soldiers served with the local East Yorkshire and other Yorkshire regiments. The memorial included 26 Teenagers, four of which died under 18. George Edward Johnson, was only 14 years old, when he was lost a sea. The eldest casualty was Chief Engineer, George Henry Robinson, lost on the Steam ship “Dido” aged 58. The Newland casualties accelerated with compulsory conscription in 1916 and as the war progressed. For example, thirty eight men were killed in 1916, 45 men died in 1917 and 75 were killed in 1918. Six men died on the same day -13th November 1916 when the Hull Pals attacked the Somme village, of Serre. Another four Hull Pals died at Oppy Wood on 3rd May 1917. Five others, died the same day, on 31st March 1918, resisting the final German offensive.
Most of the St John’s men were born in Hull, but Vernon Gibson was from South Africa, Nassau Stevens was born in the Ascension Islands and Charles Ward was from Leicestershire. The dead include, Thomas Powell, a Hull teacher, Robert Cooper a local shop keeper, Reginald Gaskell, the son of Hull’s Lord Mayor, Arthur Pearson Ellis, the Church Warden and the Thomas brothers, both sons of the Vicar of St John, Newland. Stanley Albert Robson was also the son of a local Alderman and has a stained glass window dedicated to him at the church. William Verity was member of the St John Choir. James Wright was barman at the Criterion Pub on Hessle Road. Others were local Postal workers, Clerks, Tramway workers and Tradesmen. Sergeant, James Guest, was a former Goal keeper for Hull City. Lieutenant Buttery was a well known local sportsman. The list of dead, include sons, fathers, husbands, brothers, churchmen, team mates and work colleagues. Some were only children (Philip Simmonds) and others, only sons (Howgill, Dalby, Gibson, Hunter, Storr, Herbert Taylor, and Thoresby, to name a few). The losses include many stories associated with the First World War – men from all walks of life, some enlisted underage, others being wounded multiple times before being killed. The men from the St John’s Parish served in all theatres of war and are commemorated worldwide. Eighty men have no known grave. Eighteen men are buried in Hull. There are many more names that could have been added to the St John memorial. They include Lieutenant, Frank Garniss, executed during the Irish Civil War, on 21st November 1920, aged 35. He is not listed on the Church memorial, but was given a military funeral and is buried in the Churchyard. Four men on the St John’s memorial were decorated for bravery. They include, Company Sergeant Major, Stanley Maynard, awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for rescuing two New Zealand wounded, at Gallipoli. He was also awarded the Military Medal, the French Croix De Guerre and Mentioned in Despatches for delivering a message, which saved his unit from heavy losses. He had already lost both his brothers in the war, when he was killed on 15th October 1918, aged only 22.
Below are some more images of the men from St Johns, Newland, killed during WW1.
