Lewis, George Thomas

Born Hull 14th May 1864. Son of Thomas Lewis, a Mariner.

Married at Hull, 1882. His bride Martha was daughter, of a butcher, at 6, Zion’s Place, Bean Street, Hull.

Husband of Martha Eliza Randerson (1862-1934), of 18, Lees walk, Walton Street, Hull (Army address) and 17, Paisley Street, Hull (War Pension Address). They had eight children, including son Walter killed in the war.

George Thomas Lewis served in the 1st East Yorkshire Voluntary Battalion. He worked as a Painter & Paper Hanger. Described as 5 foot, 8 inches tall, hazel eyes, grey hair, “Sober, Steady, Good Character”.

Enlisted on 3/2/1915. Served with the 2/4th EYR. Transferred to the 58th Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps. He did not serve overseas. Discharged with sickness, on 31/8/1916, after 1 year and 211 days service. (Rheumatic fever and shortness of breath). Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 161684). Died of Cardiac disease and Dropsy Coma, 7th July 1918, aged 54.

His army effects were left to his widow, Marta Eliza.

Their Son, Private, Walter Lewis (1891-1917), 14th  The King’s (Liverpool) Regiment, died of wounds at Salonika, on 12/06/1917, aged 26.
