Born Hull, 1892. Son of William John Bateman (1860-1947) and Mary Bruce Hodgson (1863-1936), at 5 Constable Buildings, English Street, Hull (1911 Census) and 38, St James Street, Hull (War pension address). He had two brothers and three sister.
He worked as a Warehouseman and was unmarried.
He joined the army on 9 June 1906. Posted to France on 17 April 1915. Served with the Labour Corps. Discharged with wounds, on 10 April 1919. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 476917). He died 5 Dec 1928, aged 36.
His elder brother, Bruce lived at 4, Vine Court, English Street, Hull and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery.
