Born Hull 1889. Son of Benjamin Hawkes (1843-1916) and Maria Hawkes, of 27, Gee Street, Hull. Both his parents were born Bristol, Gloucestershire. Son of a Dock labourer. He had five older brothers Evan, Thomas, Edward, Athur and Alfred and one sister, Lilian May
He enlisted on 21 Dec 1916. Posted to France, on 13 April 1915. Served in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Transferred as a Sapper. in the Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company. Discharged with Shell Shock, on 4 March 1918. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 336075).
Classified as Insane. Committed to the Hull City Asylum, Willerby (1921 Census).
Sent to St Nicholas Hospital, Queens Road, Yarmouth. Died on 05/02/1964. Buried at Caister Borough Cemetery, Norfolk, on 10 Feb 1964, aged 74.
He left £178 in his will to Ethel May Whitwell (wife of Charles Godfrey Whitwell).
His eldest brother, Evan Hawkes lived at 3, Albert Terrace, Gillett Street, Hull. His son Evan Hawkes, 92930, 1/9th Durham Light Infantry, was killed on 27 July 1918.
His brother, Arthur Hawkes, lived at 52, Gordon Street, Hull. He served as Private, 42261, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
