Stephenson, MM, George

Born Routh, Yorkshire, 1890. Son of William (1831-1909) and Jane Elizabeth Stephenson, of Routh, Beverley, Yorkshire.

Husband of Annie Lizzie Stephenson, of 49, Middle Street South, Driffield, Yorkshire, and 44, Westwood Road, Beverley (war pension address). They had one daughter, Marion, born on 20 Sept 1916. He was a Policeman and member of the East Riding Constabulary and is commemorated on their Memorial Plaque at St Mary’s church, Hengate, Beverley.

Enlisted at Beverley. Served with the 3rd Grenadier Guards. Died of wounds, on  03 September 1918, aged 28. Awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery.

Buried at BAC-DU-SUD BRITISH CEMETERY, BAILLEULVAL, France. His grave inscription reads, FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH REST BELOVED, REST.

His brother was also killed in the war – Acting Bombardier, John Stephenson, (1892-1917). Killed 20 Nov 1917 , aged 25. Buried at Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, Belgium
