Stoodley, Lawrence George

Born Peckham, Surrey, 1890. Son of Hugh and Martha Stoodley, of Lewisham, London.

Resided at 12, Princes Street, Bath, Somerset. He married Margaret Greensides at Bath in 1917.

Husband of Margaret at 79, Grovehill Road, Beverley, East Yorkshire (war pension address). They had one daughter, Louise Martha born on 16 Jan 1918.

A Chaffeur. Described as 5 foot, 8.5 inches tall, 130 lbs weight, 33 inch chest. He became a Professional soldier.

He enlisted in London on 5 April 1906. Served in the 4th Rifle Brigade (1911 census) in Egypt and India.

Posted to France on 2 April 1915. Wounded on 15 July 1915 and returned to England. Posted to France again on 15 July 1917. Transferred to the 2nd Rifle Brigade. Died at Passchendaele, 19 November 1917, aged 27. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

His army effects, which included a notebook and photos, were returned to his widow, who received a weekly war pension of 20/5 shillings, on 10 June 1918.
