Savage, Herbert

Born Anlaby, Hull, 1883, Son of the late William and Clara Savage, of 7, Northfield Avenue, Northfield, Hessle. He had two brothers and two sisters.

He enlisted in the 1st Troop, Life Guards, on 17 Nov 1902. In civilian life, he was a Police Constable for the East Riding Constabulary, working at the Sessions House, Beverley

Married Annie Longfield, at Stillingfleet, Yorkshire, on 23 Nov 1912. Husband of Annie Golton (formerly Savage), of Kelfield, Yorkshire. They had one son, James born on 25 Jan 1914.

Re-enlisted when war began. Served as Trooper, 1st Life Guards (Heavy Cavalry). Posted to France, on 6 Oct 1914. Killed in action, on 02 November 1914, aged 31.

Commemorated on the Ypres, Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.

His name is recorded on the East Riding Police Memorial Plaque at St Mary’s Church, Hengate, Beverley.

His brothers, Arthur and Fred sage, also served in WW1.
