Born Bridlington, 1894. Son of Edward James Smith (1853-1920) and Edith Mary Hewgill (1856-1923), of 31, Norwood, Beverley (1911 Census) and 58, High Street, Bridlington, Yorkshire (CWGC address) Son of a Grocer’s Clerk. He had four brothers and two sisters.
Educated at King Alfred’s School Lodge, Wantage, Berkshire (1911 Census).
He enlisted at Retford. Served as a Private in the Household Cavalry, Notts Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers). Killed in action, on 6 Oct 1916, aged 22. Buried in Greece. His grave inscription, reads; “JIMMY” DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI
He resided in Beverley (according to Soldiers Died records) and is commemorated on the Beverley WW1 Memorial.
He left £368 in his will to his brother, Hugh Bernard Willoughby Smith (1879-1948), a Doctor and surgeon,
