Born Sheffield, Yorkshire, 1873. Son of James Summerfield, of 193, Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield. He worked as an iron moulder/blade maker, before joining the 3rd KOYLI, on 7 Nov 1895. He married Sarah E, Birks, at Hull in 1901. He had three step children and a daughter.
His army records described him as 5 foot, 5.5 inches tall, 116 lbs weight, 116 lbs weight, 33.5 inch chest, grey eyes, brown hair, good physical development, tattoos on left arm and forearm, scar on bridge of nose, Church of England religion.
He served in India (1897), South Africa (1899-1903) and Malta and had a number of Campaign medals, including the Punjab and Relief of Ladysmith. Time expired on 6 Nov 1911 after 16 years army service. He joined the Army Reserves, on 16 April 1912. Mobilized on 5 Aug 1914. Posted to France with the BEF on 4 Dec 1914. He spent over 4 years on the Western Front, was wounded in the right hand and abdomen. He returned to England on 13 Jan 1919 and was discharged with disability and bronchitis on 31 March 1920 after 23 years service.
After the war, he lived at 41, South Parade, Anlaby Road, Hull & 13, Melville Grove, Wyndham Street, Hull (war pension addresses). He died on 13 April 1923, aged 49.
