Born Sheffield, 1873. Son of Thomas Linley, of Sheffield. He joined the army on 30 Sept 1895. He married to Mary Edith Daley, at Canterbury, 31 Oct 1896. They had five children. He worked as Grocer in Civilian Life. Served with the 19th Lancers, the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment and Northumberland Fusiliers as a Colour Sergeant. He enlisted in Hull on 9 Sept 1914. Posted to France, on 12 July 1915. His character was described as honest, intelligent and hard working, 5 foot, 8 inches tall, 118 lbs weight, 34.5 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England religion. Transferred to the Labour Corps and discharged with Tuberculosis, on 11 July 1919, after 4 years and 178 days army service.
After the war he worked for the Civil Service Customs, as a Fire watcher. He was living at 9 Hampden Terrace, Seaton St, Hull (1921 Census). Died 8 Nov 1921, aged 48
