The story of Hull in World War 1
1/8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles)
04.08.1914 Stationed at Bunhill Row as part of the 2nd London Brigade of the 1st London Division and then moved to Bisley and then Crowborough.
06.11.1914 Moved to Abbot’s Langley, Watford and transferred to the 4th London Brigade of the 2nd London Division.
18.03.1915 Mobilised for war and landed at Havre.
11.05.1915 The formation became the 140th Brigade of the 47th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including;
1915
The Battle of Aubers Ridge, The Battle of Festubert, The Battle of Loos, The subsequent Actions of the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
1916
The German attack at Vimy Ridge, The Battle of Flers-Courcelette, The Battle of the Transloy Ridges, The attacks on the Butte de Warlencourt.
1917
The Battle of Messines, The Battle of Pilkem Ridge, The Third Battles of Ypres, The Cambrai Operations.
02.02.1918 Absorbed the 2/8th Battalion to become the 8th Battalion and transferred to the 174th Brigade of the 58th Division
1918
The Battle of St Quentin, The Battle of the Avre, The Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, The Battle of Amiens, The Battle of Albert, The Second Battle of Bapaume, The Battle of Epehy, The general final advance in Artois.
11.11.1918 Ended the war at Waudingnies south of Ath, Belgium.
Born Frodingham, Yorkshire, 1894. Son of Robert and Harriet Fewson, of North Frodingham, Driffield, East Yorkshire. He worked as a Horseman On Farm at Manor House, Tibthorpe Wold, Driffield. Enlisted Bridlington. Formerly 3412, Army Service Corps. Transferred to the 8th Royal Fusiliers London Regiment. Killed in action, on 9 April 1917, aged 24. Buried in … Read more
