1/9th (City of London) Battalion (Queen Victoria’s Rifles)
04.08.1914 Stationed at Berkeley Square as part of the 3rd London Brigade of the 1st London Division and then moved to Bullswater, Pirbright and then Crowborough.
Nov 1914 Mobilised for war leaving the 1st London Division and landed at Havre.
27.11.1914 Transferred to the 13th Brigade of the 5th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including;
The First Battle of Ypres.
1915
The Second Battle of Ypres and the Capture of Hill 60.
10.02.1916 Absorbed the 2/9th Battalion to become the 9th Battalion and transferred to the 169th Brigade of the 56th Division;
1916
In January 1916 the War Office authorised the re-formation of the London Division, now to be known as the 56th, in France.
The diversionary attack at Gommecourt, The Battle of Ginchy, The Battle of Flers-Courcelette, The Battle of Morval, The Battle of the Transloy Ridges.
1917
The German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, The First Battle of the Scarpe, The Third Battle of the Scarpe, The Battle of Langemarck, The capture of Tadpole Copse, The capture of Bourlon Wood, The German counter attacks.
1918
The First Battle of Arras, The Battle of Albert, The Battle of the Scarpe, The Battle of the Canal du Nord, The Battle of the Cambrai, The pursuit to the Selle, The Battle of the Sambre, The passage of the Grand Honelle.
11.11.1918 Ended the war at Peruwelz S.E. of Tournai, Belgium.
