BORN HULL 1866. SON OF FRANCIS ALLVIN & ANNIE POLLARD (1837-1910), OF 39 LEONARD STREET, HULL. SON OF A BRICKLAYER. A SAILOR. WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY SERVED FULL TERM IN THE ROYAL NAVY. HE MARRIED FIRST EMMA ELIZABETH TAFFINDER (1868-1918), IN HULL, IN 1891, AGED 25. THEY HAD TWO SONS. HE THEN MARRIED MARGARET McHUGH, AT GATESHEAD, DURHAM, ON 03/06/1895, AGED 29. IN HIS ARMY RECORDS HE RECORDS A THIRD WIFE, ANNIE ALLVIN.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, AS LANCE SERGEANT, 625, 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 02/09/1914. HE GAVE HIS AGE AS 45 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 9 INCHES TALL, 156 LBS WEIGHT, 40 INCH CHEST, GREYS EYES AND GREY HAIR. HE HAD A NUMBER OF TATTOOS AND BULLET MARK SCARS WHEN HE ENLISTED. HE DESERTED ON 23/11/1914. THEN SERVED AS 2ND MATE ON THE NEWCASTLE STEAM SHIP “BEES WING”. LOST WITH ALL 22 CREW, ON 04/03/1915. HIS CWGC RECORDS REPORT THAT HE WAS AGED 43. HE WAS ACTUALLY AGED 49. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
SS Beeswing, built by Palmers’ Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle in 1889 and owned at the time of her loss by Lowlands Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. (J. Crass & Co.), Newcastle, was a British steamer of 1924 tons. SS Beeswing was reported missing since sailing on March 2nd, 1915 from the Tyne for Dieppe with a cargo of coal, It is possible that Beeswing, was sunk by a mine or a torpedo from a German submarine.
