HULL PALS MEMORIAL POST. LIEUTENANT ERNEST JOHN ANDREW. Born Leytonstone, Essex, on 11/10/1887. Ernest was the son of John Mann Andrew and Mary Jane Mann. He was a Typewriter Mechanic, living at 10 Knighton Road, Forest Gate, East London (1911 Census)
He was married at Hull Holy Trinity Church, on 18th January 1917. Husband to Ethel Florence Mann of Grafton House, Grafton Street, Hull. Ernest was killed in action near St. Quentin on 23rd March 1918 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. It was two days after the launch of the German Spring Offensive and the Allies were being driven back over the Somme battlefields, conceding ground they’d won at such high a cost over the summer and autumn of 1916. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial to the 14,000 men who lost their lives during the Spring Offensive, but have no known grave; he was 30 years old.
His army Effects and £350, 4s 7d were left to his widow, living at this Probate address.
His elder brother, Albert Robert Andrew served with the Imperial Yeomanry, during the Boer War.
