BORN HULL 1890. SON OF FREDERICK ANDREW (1867-1941) & ROSE HANNAH SLATER (1865-1949), AT 53 BEETON STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD. SON OF A LIGHTERMAN. ONE OF 12 CHILDREN AND 10 SONS. EMPLOYED AS A SLAUGHTER HOUSE MAN.
HE MARRIED, CLARE ELIZABETH BOULTON, AT HULL’S HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, ON 25/12/1914. THEY LIVED AT THIS ARMY ADDRESS WITH THEIR SON, FRED, BORN IN 28/11/1915.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 26/08/1916, AGED 26 YEARS AND 7 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIM, AS 5 FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 116 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST AND ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE TRAINED AT WITHERNSEA. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 23/01/1917, WITH THE 10TH EYR.. POSTED TO THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 14/02/1917. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 24/04/1917, AGED 27. COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL.
HE LEFT SURVIVING BROTHERS, WILLIAM, ALFRED AND CHARLES, AND SISTERS, EVA AND EDITH AT 53, BEETON STREET, HULL.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS INCLUDED LETTERS, CARDS, POCKET KNIFE, PENCIL CASE, PURSE AND A KEY. THEY WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, CLARA, WHO RECEIVED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION, OF 18 SHILLINGS AND NINE PENCE FOR HERSELF AND SON. SHE LATER BECAME MRS KIRKBY AND MOVED TO CLIFTON VIEW, HANTS HEAD MOOR, CHECKHEATON (CWGC ADDRESS).
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 24/04/1919. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATHEWS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, HULL.
